Have you ever been able to edit something before you've actually written a word?
Have you ever tried being more clear, or more thorough in your explanation without ever saying anything?
Or have you ever tried to make a system work without ever implementing a thing?
I know what you’re thinking … duh, Jill. That’s not possible.
Yet I see it all the time.
It's the story we tell ourselves about researching, about thinking, about preparing.
We think that with more research or more thinking we’ll be able to get it right. We think that reading or learning from experts is being productive when really, we learn by doing.
Inaction can be hard to spot, especially in ourselves.
Many entrepreneurs have the belief that everything has to be perfect first before they begin. They need the perfect website before they go live, they need to polish up each last piece of content before they launch a program and have the perfect business card before they go out and network.
But nothing will ever be perfect and everything will always be changing.
If perfectionism is keeping you from working toward your goals, think of how you will feel a month, 6 months or even a year from now when you are no further ahead. Taking imperfect action means swallowing your pride and taking action to move forward.
Think of something you’ve been wanting to implement but haven’t taken action on.
Taking imperfect action isn’t about being impulsive. It’s about being clear on what you want and taking the steps to get there. Doing so will help you gain clarity and knowledge. When you take imperfect action, you will find yourself growing as a person and you will begin to open yourself to new ideas and opportunities.
Often when we are resisting something in our business there is a limiting belief that is keeping us stuck where we are. If things are imperfect we find ourselves in fear of criticism and rejection. We sabotage ourselves with the belief that we don’t know enough or aren’t good enough.
PERFECTIONISM WILL SLOW YOU DOWN. THE SOLUTION IS TO TAKE IMPERFECT ACTION
By taking imperfect steps forward you will learn to trust your abilities. As a result, your confidence will be boosted and those voices in your head telling you that you can’t do it will fade.
Perfectionism can slow you down. You have to take imperfect action which will be uncomfortable and messy and that’s okay.
But if you don’t make a start you’ll never get there. You will never move forward.
Taking imperfect action is a muscle that you have to strengthen. To act instead of research, to do instead of think.
What is something that you’ve been putting off in the name of research?
When have you said, “I need some more time to think or ponder this.”
What is something that you've been wanting to create but it just needs one more round of edits?
Let's get out there and create that thing.
Let's try that new routine.
You'll learn so much - from what you do really well to what you don't do really well - and then you can make it even better. Because you have data, experience, and results to be able to go back, learn, and do again.
How do I start taking imperfect action?
START BY MAKING FASTER DECISIONS
Decisions will lead to action. Producing something imperfect will lead to something better.
The hardest place is starting from scratch. But once you go beyond starting from scratch you’ll be able to get so much done without having all the answers. Just know that over time you can change anything. You call the shots!
It’s so simple. This is nothing you don’t already know but this might be something that you haven’t done.
Find that one thing you’ve been sitting on and make a decision.
DON’T LET DECISIONS FEEL FINAL
I think one of the biggest reasons we sit in indecision (which is actually a choice, by the way), is that we are afraid that whatever we choose we’re going to have to live with forever.
We feel like we are making this choice for our business that will be the same for the length of our business life. So, for as long as I’m coaching, I will always do 1:1 coaching. For as long as I’ve been coaching, I’ll be using this signature program. For as long as I’m in business, I will be working with this niche.
It’s easy to forget that hardly any of these decisions are actually final. They feel final, but are they really?
Last time I checked, you are in charge of your life and your business, and therefore, you are allowed to change your mind.
I’ll say it again, you are allowed to change your mind.
How does that make the pending decision feel? Not so big anymore, right?
If you knew that 1:1 coaching was only going to be for the next year, at which point you would have the option of changing to a group coaching model or membership, would it matter quite so much?
Because that’s the truth. You can change your mind, and life can change its mind too. Nothing has to be permanent.
GET COMFORTABLE BEING UNCOMFORTABLE
What feeling stuck really boils down to is being afraid of feeling uncomfortable. Feeling stuck means that we have to learn something new, or we have to do something that we’ve not done before to move forward. Most of the time we don’t want to go there because it challenges us and moves us out of our comfort zone. Instead, we tell ourselves that we’re stuck and we don’t know where to start.
To move forward in your business you have to be willing to get uncomfortable.
The more uncomfortable you can get and the more you can sit with that feeling of being uncomfortable the more it will allow you to do the things that scare you. It will allow you to move forward even when you don’t have all the answers and when things feel really uncertain. But moving forward will get you where you want to go.
You want to get to a place of feeling comfortable with being uncomfortable.
STOP PLAYING SMALL
Saying “I don’t know what to do, so I’m not going to make any moves yet” may feel like a legitimate reason why you’re not making progress. You might be saying to yourself “My website’s not ready, so I can’t start writing my blog” or “My email list isn’t big enough yet so I won’t focus on email marketing yet”. Essentially you’re saying “I’m stuck and I’m not going to move”. And so you don’t.
Feeling stuck is an excuse. You’re using that excuse to stay playing small and staying stuck.
Many of us wait around until the perfect moment to take action. We hold ourselves back from taking action on the things we think about over and over again. The thing is, we’re only wasting time if we’re thinking about doing things instead of actually doing them.
You only have so much time and energy and you definitely do not want to be wasting it on thinking instead of doing.
In my opinion, there are two key problems with over-researching when it comes to taking imperfect action.
The first issue is that research is often confused with productivity, when in reality, it’s an activity. Activities keep you busy, but they don’t result in tangible outputs. Only productive actions will get you closer to your goal. In other words, you’re consuming a lot of information, but you’re not producing anything. If days go by where you have no measurable outputs to account for your time, then you are playing desk.
That’s right. Playing Desk is a way that people avoid the discomfort of jumping in and taking imperfect action. It’s procrastination. Don’t confuse being busy with being productive.
The second, and potentially more dangerous part of doing too much research, is that you’ll often get a lot of conflicting advice. Some advice is good; too much advice is confusing. Here’s an example: over the years of building my business and searching how to grow my business, one source would say that I shouldn’t spend any money on marketing until I’ve done organic growth (i.e., clients referring my services to all of their friends). Another source told me that I should spend a casual $100/day on Facebook ads. Two polar opposite strategies from sources claiming to bring businesses like mine to great success.
Such conflicting advice can keep you stuck in indecision and foster self-doubt. When you spend all of your time overthinking and getting a lot of opinions, you miss out on the valuable opportunity to test and gather data to draw your own conclusions. The answer to this is imperfect action.
Imperfect action taking is a daily practice. It means prioritizing progress over perfect procrastination every time. It means celebrating tiny wins. It means lowering expectations + redefining success.
Imperfect action taking looks like consistently taking small steps towards making your big creative ideas happen and trusting yourself and the process enough to know that small steps add up in the end.
Consistency builds confidence, because you’re literally showing yourself that you’re capable of great things.
If you have a vision you really, really believe in, you’re going to continue taking that imperfect action. You’re going to keep showing up, messy + imperfectly, because you believe in your vision.
Your goals and ideas should scare you a little, so that you know you're stretching yourself.
Self-doubt is a guide but, ultimately, YOU are the decision maker. Move through it and take imperfect action on your big creative ideas. Remember that on the other side is something great waiting for you.
Accept that comparison’s going to happen.
Focus on doing the work.
And tune in with your vision, be compassionate and trust the process along the way.
Seriously, you have to show up and take imperfect action to get to where you want to be. It’s going to be hard some days… most days. But it’s going to be so, so worth it.
Focused Coaching with me can help you get started as well.
Focused Coaching is for the coach, course creator, or entrepreneur who wants simple strategies, systems, step-by-step plans and support - without being locked into a 1:1 coaching contract for months.
In these 60 minute sessions we focus solely on the topic they need help with and I help them figure out a solution in the moment.
* For some, this is a simple funnel or lead magnet.
* For others, this is a signature offer.
* For most, it's an actual marketing strategy.
You have two options to choose from:
Option 1: You get my knowledge, expertise, and strategy ideas on WHAT you need to do (helping you cut corners and not having the need to buy an expensive Do It Yourself course). At the end of each session you’re responsible to implement the strategies and processes by yourself building on your own knowledge and expertise.
Option 2: You get me hands-on in your business working with you side-by-side for an hour. Mapping, strategizing, planning, and drawing up a whole entire plan together for whatever it is you need, and then I work with you to get it done!
