Why am I sharing this personal story today?
Welcome back to another episode of Simplify Your Business, Amplify Your Life.
Back in the first episode I mentioned our first daughter was born terminally ill. She was diagnosed with Trisomy 18 (Edwards Syndrome). Her name was Jessica.
Without getting too science-yy on you, I want to explain what Trisomy 18 is and why I’m talking about it on today’s episode.
Trisomy 18 is a condition that is caused by an error in cell division in the developing baby.
Instead of the normal 23 pairs of chromosomes we all have, a child with T18 ends up with 24 chromosomes because their #18 chromosome divided into 3 making it triple and not a pair. When this happens it disrupts the normal pattern of development in significant ways that can be life-threatening, even before birth. Another example of Trisomy would be Trisomy 21 which is known as Down syndrome. They have an extra (3) chromosomes of their #21.
The extra eighteenth chromosome in Trisomy babies can cause a wide variety of problems (sometimes referred to as birth defects).
Just as children with Down syndrome can range from mildly to severely affected, the same is true for children with Trisomy 18.
This means that there is no hard and fast rule about what Trisomy 18 will mean for a specific child.
Each child has their own unique profile of how Trisomy 18 is affecting their developing body and organs.
However, all studies on survival rates show that there is a high mortality rate for children with Trisomy 18 before or shortly after birth.
When Jessica was born they told us she would probably only live for 6 weeks. So you can imagine that we spent those 6 weeks - in the NICU -just watching her breathe hoping they were wrong.
When she passed the 6 week mark and allowed us to take her home, they told us that most don’t live past 6 months. Once again, we spent our days, weeks and months watching her breathe hoping they were wrong.
When she made it past the 6 month mark, we were told that 97% don’t make it past their 1st year. By now, we realized that this little fighter was surpassing all of the statistics and we continued to love and care for her as we had been. She spent that first year of her life in and out of the hospital 14 times.
Her 1st birthday came and we had a great celebration - even her pediatrician came.
Jessica continued to blow the statistics out of the water until she passed away at the age of 2 ½.
If you want to learn more about Trisomy 18, I’ll leave a link in the show notes because I want to tell you why I’m talking about all of this in today's episode.
